This grosso was struck during one of the most turbulent successions in Milanese history. Bernabò Visconti had co-ruled Milan with his nephew Gian Galeazzo since 1378, but the arrangement was always uneasy. In May 1385, Gian Galeazzo lured Bernabò into an ambush outside Milan under the pretense of a devotional meeting, had him arrested, and imprisoned him in Trezzo castle, where he died later that year. Coinage bearing both names was abruptly obsolete — production ceased, and surviving examples reflect a window of fewer than three years of joint issue.
