Between them, a long patriarchal cross or sceptre is held jointly, serving as the central axis of the composition. Both figures wear elaborate garments rendered in stylized drapery typical of 13th-century Bulgarian coinage. Cyrillic legends in the field identify the two rulers, reading ч. МИХАИЛ to the left and ч. ИРИНА to the right. The flan is irregular and the die work is characteristic of medieval hammered coinage. |
