Reverse description The reverse displays the city arms of Göttingen — a rampant lion passant within a shield — centrally positioned within a beaded inner circle. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield reading GROSSVS, with additional lettering denoting the city name GOTTINGENSIS or abbreviated form, in Gothic blackletter style. The hammered flan shows slight weakness at the edges, typical of municipal groschen of this period.

Additional information

Göttingen's municipal counterstamping program of the 1670s was a direct response to the flood of debased small silver circulating across Lower Saxony in the aftermath of the Kipper- und Wipperzeit, the currency crisis of 1619–1623 that had seen mints across the Holy Roman Empire systematically shave and debase coinage for short-term fiscal gain. Decades later, underweight groschen were still working through circulation. The city applied its own stamp as a guarantee of locally accepted value — essentially vouching for coins it had no hand in striking.

Krusy G 2.30 is among the less frequently encountered varieties of this municipal authentication series.
