Anhalt-Bernburg's joint coinage with Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Köthen in the late 1830s reflects the broader German push toward intra-state monetary coordination that preceded the Prussian-dominated Münzverein agreements. Alexander Charles ruled Bernburg from 1834 until the duchy was absorbed into a unified Anhalt in 1863, but this particular issue dates to a period when the three Anhalt branches still maintained separate courts while sharing minting arrangements. The collaboration was pragmatic — none of the three duchies had sufficient volume to justify independent mint operations for small denominations.
