Additional information

Adolphus II of Nassau-Walram secured the Mainz archbishopric only after one of the most destructive ecclesiastical disputes of the fifteenth century. The Mainz Diocesan Feud of 1461–1463 pitted him against the incumbent Diether von Isenburg, ending with Diether's forcible removal and the near-total sack of Mainz itself in October 1462 — the same year this groschen enters the record. The city never fully recovered its commercial prominence.

Adolphus remained a contentious figure throughout his tenure, his coinage authority tied directly to the political settlement that ended the feud.
