Philip the Bold struck this issue during the period when Flemish monetary policy was being aggressively manipulated to fund Burgundian ambitions — the billon content reflects deliberate debasement rather than a neutral technical choice. The "Jangelaar" name, derived from the Flemish verb meaning to jangle or clatter, was the population's own sardonic label for a coin whose poor silver content announced itself audibly in the purse.
