The portrait is rendered in a bold, schematic late medieval style characteristic of Scottish hammered coinage, set within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding legend in uncial Gothic lettering reads IACOBVS : DEI : GRA : REX : SCOTORV, separated by mullet stops, running clockwise between the inner and outer beaded borders. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | A floriated long cross with ornate terminals divides the field into four quarters, with the cross arms terminating in trefoil or floral finials and featuring raised central bosses at the intersections of the arms. Alternate quarters contain a six-pointed mullet (star) and a thistle head, the characteristic Scottish emblems employed on James III groats. The peripheral legend in uncial lettering reads VILLA : EDINBVRGH, denoting the Edinburgh mint, contained between inner and outer beaded circles. |
