| 表面の説明 | Front-facing crowned effigy of James II, rendered in a stylised Gothic manner, set within a nine-lobed tressure with fleurs-de-lis at each cusp. The king's portrait is depicted with schematic facial features characteristic of mid-15th century Scottish hammered coinage. The surrounding legend is separated from the inner design by a beaded inner circle. The overall presentation reflects the second coinage artistic conventions of the Scottish royal mint. |

James II's second coinage was forced by a chronic shortage of bullion that plagued the Scottish mint through the 1450s, compelling repeated adjustments to the fineness and weight of silver issues. The groats of this first issue retain a relatively higher silver content before subsequent debasements made the coinage increasingly problematic for trade.
James II died in 1460 when a cannon exploded beside him at the siege of Roxburgh — closing the very reign that produced this issue.
