Obverse description Front-facing crowned effigy of James II, rendered in a stylised Gothic manner, set within a nine-lobed tressure with fleurs-de-lis at each cusp. The king's portrait is depicted with schematic facial features characteristic of mid-15th century Scottish hammered coinage. The surrounding legend is separated from the inner design by a beaded inner circle. The overall presentation reflects the second coinage artistic conventions of the Scottish royal mint.
