Louis II of Flanders issued this fractional groat during a period of acute political instability in the county, when the textile cities of Ghent, Bruges, and Ypres were locked in chronic conflict with comital authority over trade privileges and monetary policy. The "Botdrager" series takes its name from a Flemish term for a small load-bearer — a colloquial reference to the coin's modest purchasing power relative to the full groat.
