Below the shields is an additional escutcheon bearing the Cologne city arms. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial script reads MONETA NOVA AVREA RI, identifying this as the new gold money struck at Riehl (Riol). The reverse design is characteristic of the Rhenish electoral goldgulden tradition of the mid-fifteenth century. |
