Theodoric II of Moers held the Archbishopric of Cologne from 1414 until his death in 1463, making his nearly five-decade tenure one of the longest in the see's medieval history. His reign coincided with the turbulent years of the Council of Basel, during which he navigated the competing demands of conciliarist factions and papal authority with considerable political dexterity. The goldgulden issues of his archbishopric followed the Rhine goldgulden standard, established by the Rhenish Electoral League — a monetary agreement among the archbishops of Cologne, Mainz, and Trier, and the Count Palatine — which had governed Rhenish gold coinage since 1354.
The "Riehl" designation identifies the mint location at Riehl, a suburban district north of Cologne where the archbishopric operated a mint separate from the city itself.
