| Reverse description | The reverse presents a frontal standing figure of Saint John the Baptist, nimbed and robed in a long garment, raising his right hand in blessing while holding a book or lamb in his left arm, consistent with the iconographic tradition of Rhenish goldgulden derived from the Florentine florin type. To the upper left, a small heraldic eagle, the arms of the Palatinate, is visible in the field. The surrounding uncial Latin legend reads S IOHANNES B, an abbreviated invocation of Saint John the Baptist as patron saint. The figure is rendered in a flat, linear Gothic style typical of mid-14th century hammered gold coinage. The flan exhibits the characteristic irregularity of hand-struck medieval gold. |
