To the upper left, a small heraldic eagle, the arms of the Palatinate, is visible in the field. The surrounding uncial Latin legend reads S IOHANNES B, an abbreviated invocation of Saint John the Baptist as patron saint. The figure is rendered in a flat, linear Gothic style typical of mid-14th century hammered gold coinage. The flan exhibits the characteristic irregularity of hand-struck medieval gold. |
