Frederick III of Saarwerden held the archiepiscopal see of Cologne from 1370 to 1414, one of the longer tenures of the medieval period, and his mint at Deutz — the settlement directly across the Rhine from Cologne — operated under rights distinct from the city mint. The Rhenish goldgulden type was by this point governed by the quadripartite monetary union of 1354 among the Rhenish electors, which standardized weight and fineness across the competing ecclesiastical territories. Frederick was a signatory power to that agreement's renewals.
The 1385–1386 dating places this issue within a period of acute tension between Frederick and the city of Cologne itself, which was actively resisting archiepiscopal authority during this decade.
