Frederick I received the Margraviate of Brandenburg as a hereditary fief from Emperor Sigismund in 1415 — payment, essentially, for Hohenzollern military and financial support during the tumultuous years of the Council of Constance. These gulden were struck during the first decade of Hohenzollern rule over Brandenburg, a dynasty that would hold the territory for the next five centuries. The Franconian mint traditions Frederick brought with him from Ansbach heavily influenced early Brandenburg coinage.
