Albert II's reign lasted just nineteen months before his death from dysentery in October 1439, making his Frankfurt goldgulden one of the shorter-lived issues of any Holy Roman Emperor. He was elected King of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia in rapid succession following his father-in-law Sigismund's death in 1437, consolidating the Habsburg claim to the imperial title in a way that would define the dynasty's grip on the office for the next three centuries.
The Frankfurt mint operated under the authority of the Rhenish electoral mint union, which strictly regulated the gold standard for gulden across participating mints. Albert's abbreviated reign window narrows the production period considerably.
