背面描述 An imperial orb surmounted by a cross, set within a Gothic quatrefoil whose four lobes are defined by a beaded inner border. The field surrounding the quatrefoil carries the titles of Emperor Karl V in Gothic (black-letter) script, with the date 1522 incorporated at the close of the legend. The composition follows the established Rhenish goldgulden type, reflecting Frankfurt's status as an imperial city entitled to strike gold coinage.

附加信息

Frankfurt's goldgulden production in 1522 placed the city squarely in the middle of one of the most volatile moments in German political history — Luther's appearance before the Diet of Worms had occurred just the year before, and the Free Imperial Cities were navigating an increasingly fractured relationship with both Emperor Charles V and the reforming church. Frankfurt's mint rights as a Free Imperial City were hard-won and jealously guarded; the city had held imperial minting privileges since the medieval period and used them to assert civic independence at precisely the moments when that independence was most contested.
