Guelders had been absorbed into Habsburg control in 1543 after Charles V defeated Duke William of Cleves, ending the duchy's political independence. By the time Philip II was issuing coinage in his own name from these territories, Guelders was administratively consolidated into the Habsburg Netherlands — yet local mint rights persisted, producing regionally distinct coinages like this one within a centralized imperial framework.

The "without ANG" designation distinguishes this die variant from issues where Philip's titulature included the Angliae rex claim, which he held through his marriage to Mary I of England from 1554 until her death in 1558. After her death, Philip dropped the English royal title from his coinage progressively across the Low Countries mints — this piece post-dates that removal.
