Maximilian I inherited a fractured imperial coinage system and spent much of his reign attempting to standardize it — the Reichsmünzordnung of 1524 would finish what he started, though he never lived to see it. These Frankfurt guilders were struck under imperial city authority rather than directly by Maximilian's own mints, Frankfurt holding a long-established right to produce gold coinage that predated his reign by over a century.
The wide reference spread across JuF#128–131 and Levinson#I-314–360 reflects genuine die variation accumulated across nearly two decades of production.
