| 背面描述 | Two standing figures of Saints Paul and Peter depicted facing one another in the field, each identified by their traditional attributes: Saint Paul on the left holding a sword and book, Saint Peter on the right holding crossed keys. The figures are rendered in a robust Renaissance style with drapery folds clearly articulated. Below the saints, the papal arms of Leo X — the Medici coat of arms surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys — are displayed in the lower portion of the field. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding circular Latin legend reading PAVLVS S PETRVS. |

Leo X — born Giovanni de' Medici — was elected pope in 1513 and immediately set about financing an extravagant court and the ongoing construction of St. Peter's Basilica, partly through the aggressive sale of indulgences that would, within four years, provoke Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses. Macerata held a papal mint operating under legatine authority, and its giulio issues from this pontificate are among the more infrequently encountered provincial strikes of the period — the Rome mint dominated production, leaving outlying mints to fill local demand in comparatively small runs.
