Piedforts were produced in Monaco primarily for sale to collectors and foreign dignitaries rather than for any testing or approval function — by 1960 the essai-piedfort tradition was essentially ceremonial. Rainier III had married Grace Kelly in 1956, and the subsequent surge in international interest in Monaco made presentation-quality coinage a minor but genuine revenue stream for the principality.
The Gadoury reference MC150 places this among a tight cluster of piedfort issues from the same year, all struck at the Paris Mint under its longstanding arrangement with Monaco.
