Monaco struck this franc under Prince Louis II during a period when the principality had no mint of its own — production was contracted to the Paris Mint, as was standard for Monaco throughout the early twentieth century. Louis II had only formally assumed full sovereignty in 1922 following the death of Albert I, and these early-reign issues represent the first coinage struck entirely under his authority rather than as regent.
The copper-aluminium alloy was a postwar economy measure widely adopted across European mints in the 1920s, replacing the silver that had been drained by wartime demands on national reserves.
