Guinea's 1962 franc issues were among the first coins struck after the country's abrupt break from the French West African monetary union following independence in 1958. When Sékou Touré rejected the new French Community in a referendum — the only Francophone African territory to do so — France immediately withdrew all technical and financial assistance, including the infrastructure supporting the CFA franc. The Guinean franc was introduced to fill that void, backed by little more than political will.
The Paris Mint produced these early issues under contract, an arrangement that carried its own quiet irony.
