| Reverse description | Three coats of arms — representing West Flanders, Namur, and Limbourg — arranged in the central field before a stylized tree, whose trunk bisects the design vertically. The bilingual legend 'BELGIQUE BELGIE' arcs across the field, with 'BELGIQUE' (French) and 'BELGIE' (Dutch) appearing on either side of the central divider. The composition reflects Belgium's dual linguistic identity and the heraldic tradition of its provincial emblems. |

Belgium's 1939 franc carries the full weight of that particular moment: the country was rearming frantically while officially clinging to its neutrality policy reinstated in 1936, when Leopold III severed the Franco-Belgian military alliance. Nickel coinage of this type would be largely suspended within a year as German occupation authorities requisitioned base metals for the war economy, making 1939 one of the final strikes of the pre-occupation series.
