Obverse description Frontal bust of Bishop Athanasius II depicted in Byzantine style, wearing episcopal vestments and nimbus (halo), rendered in crude hammered relief characteristic of ninth-century Neapolitan coinage. The figure is shown facing, with arms extended or crossed before the body. The abbreviated Latin legend ATH EPS (Athanasius Episcopus) is distributed in the field to either side of the bust. The overall design reflects strong Byzantine artistic influence, with flat, stylized facial features and a broad, irregular flan.
