The fleurs-de-lis are rendered in a bold, somewhat rustic style consistent with the primitive engraving techniques employed at the Pondicherry mint during the early eighteenth century. The reverse bears no legend or inscription. The irregular flan edges and uneven strike are characteristic of the hammered coinage produced for French colonial circulation in India. |

The Compagnie des Indes received its revised charter in 1719 under John Law's restructuring of French colonial finance, and the Pondicherry bronzes of 1723 were among the first coinage issues produced under that reorganized authority. The Company struck these locally for petty trade in its southeastern Indian territories, where French commercial footholds were perpetually contested by both the British East India Company and local Mughal successor states.
