Mahmud Shah Tughluq's reign over the Delhi Sultanate was nominal at best. By 1393, the sultanate had fractured catastrophically in the wake of Timur's 1398 sack of Delhi — a raid that left the city depopulated and the treasury gutted. Mahmud Shah ruled in name while actual power shifted between competing nobles, and copper coinage of this period reflects that institutional collapse: irregular in output, inconsistent in fabric, minted under conditions far removed from the organized imperial machinery of earlier Tughluq rulers.
At 13 mm, this falus sits at the smaller end of late Tughluq copper production, consistent with metal shortages documented after Timur's withdrawal.
