Dost Muhammad Khan had already ruled Afghanistan once, been exiled by the British following the First Anglo-Afghan War, and then been restored to Kabul in 1843 — yet Balkh remained outside his firm control until the late 1850s. These falus pieces from the Balkh mint date to the final years of his second reign, when he was consolidating northern territories while simultaneously maintaining the 1855 Treaty of Peshawar with the British. He died in June 1863, shortly after taking Herat, making this issue a product of his last significant phase of territorial expansion.
