Additional information

Ali Adil Shah I ruled Bijapur from 1558 to 1580, a period defined by the sultanate's uneasy pivot between Shia and Sunni allegiance and its military alliance with the Deccan Sultanates against Vijayanagara — the coalition that destroyed that Hindu empire at Talikota in 1565. Copper falus from his reign circulated in a regional economy still absorbing the shock of that campaign's plunder. Dating by Hijri year places this piece within a reign marked by ambitious construction and chronic factional tension at court.
