Qandahar's civic coinage occupies an odd corner of Afghan numismatics — issued under municipal rather than royal authority during a period when central Kabul control over southern Afghanistan was perpetually contested. The 1879 date places this piece squarely within the Second Anglo-Afghan War, when British forces occupied Kandahar following the Battle of Ahmad Khel and held the city until 1881.
Local copper falus of this type rarely survived intact; they circulated hard in bazaar economies with no institutional reason for hoarding.
