Yazīd ibn Ghūrak governed Samarqand as a Sogdian vassal under the Umayyad caliphate following the Arab conquest of Transoxiana. His coinage represents one of the last gasps of indigenous Sogdian monetary authority — production was permitted, but increasingly constrained by the administrative apparatus of the caliphate. The precise window of this issue coincides with the Abbasid Revolution of 750, which overthrew the Umayyads and reorganized the eastern provinces, yet local dynastic coinage in Samarqand continued under Abbasid suzerainty into the 780s.
