Nuh ibn Asad was the first Samanid ruler to govern Transoxiana as a unified territory, having been granted Samarkand by the Abbasid caliph Al-Ma'mun in 819. Binkath — modern Tashkent — served as the administrative center of the Shash region, and copper fals struck there circulated locally while silver dirhams dominated long-distance trade on the Silk Road routes running through the Ferghana Valley.
A#M1440 is among the earlier attributed Samanid copper issues, predating the dynasty's full consolidation under Ismail ibn Ahmad later in the century.
