Arabic legends in Kufic script are disposed above and below the central square, as well as in the lateral fields, naming the issuing ruler Malik Aram. A further marginal legend runs around the periphery of the flan. The overall design represents a characteristic fusion of Central Asian Buddhist iconographic conventions with Islamic epigraphic practice. |
