Akhsikath — known today as the Akhsi region of the Fergana Valley in Uzbekistan — served as a significant administrative center under the Samanids, who governed as nominally Abbasid vassals while exercising near-total autonomous control over Transoxiana. Asad b. Ahmad held governorship in this eastern territory during the early consolidation period of Samanid power, roughly a decade before Ismail b. Ahmad unified the dynasty's dominance over the region. Copper fulus of this type were struck for local bazaar transactions; the silver dirham economy operated at a different scale entirely.
