Italy's euro-denomination coins dated 1999 were never intended for circulation — they were issued exclusively as part of official mint sets distributed before eurozone coins entered public hands in January 2002. The Maschio Angioino, the Angevin fortress in Naples begun under Charles I of Anjou in 1279, appeared on regional collector issues rather than the national circulation series, placing this piece firmly outside the standard euro coinage program overseen by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato.
