The Maschio Angioino, the Angevin fortress in Naples begun under Charles I of Anjou in 1279, appeared on regional collector issues rather than the national circulation series, placing this piece firmly outside the standard euro coinage program overseen by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato.
