Vatican euro coins issued under John Paul II were never intended for circulation — the Holy See joined the eurozone by agreement with Italy but has no retail banking infrastructure, meaning these pieces went directly into annual collector sets. Genuine examples from this period are far less common in circulated condition than crude counterfeits suggest, since most authentic coins never left their original packaging. The 2005 date is particularly significant: John Paul II died on April 2nd of that year, and mintage was curtailed, making it the lowest-production year of the four-year run.
