| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse features a stylised cartographic representation of the fifteen member states of the European Union as constituted at the time of issue, rendered in a simplified geographic format against a lined background evoking a globe. The denomination 1 EURO is boldly inscribed to the left of the map, with the designer's initials LL for Luc Luycx discreetly placed within the design. The twelve stars of Europe appear on the outer ring of the bimetallic coin, consistent with the common reverse design series for the 1 Euro denomination. The composition balances the numeral and map elements in a clean, modern graphic style characteristic of the original eurozone coinage designs. |

Vatican euro coins issued under John Paul II were never intended for circulation — the Holy See joined the eurozone by agreement with Italy but has no retail banking infrastructure, meaning these pieces went directly into annual collector sets. Genuine examples from this period are far less common in circulated condition than crude counterfeits suggest, since most authentic coins never left their original packaging. The 2005 date is particularly significant: John Paul II died on April 2nd of that year, and mintage was curtailed, making it the lowest-production year of the four-year run.
