A double-sided error — both faces struck from the same die orientation — this piece falls into the category of mint errors produced during the chaotic early production runs ahead of the euro's January 1999 accounting introduction and the 2002 physical launch. The European Central Bank coordinated coin production across twelve national mints simultaneously, an unprecedented logistical undertaking that predictably generated a higher error rate than any single sovereign mint would have tolerated.
