Malta joined the eurozone on January 1, 2008, replacing the Maltese lira after 40 years of circulation. The transition gave the Central Bank of Malta no creative latitude over the common reverse — that design is fixed across all eurozone members — but national authorities chose the Maltese cross for the obverse series, a symbol tied directly to the Knights of St. John, who administered the island from 1530 until Napoleon's seizure in 1798.
