Fernando VI never visited the Americas, but his monetary administration there was notably hands-off — the Guatemala mint operated under considerable local autonomy during his reign, and the cob-style macuquina coinage of this period reflects production conditions far removed from Madrid's oversight. These irregularly struck gold pieces were assayed and certified locally, their weight the only true guarantee of value.
The Guatemalan mint had been re-established in 1731 after a long dormancy, and issues from the early 1750s remain scarce relative to later milled coinage from the same facility.
