Bolivia's 1868 escudo coinage came at a politically turbulent moment — Mariano Melgarejo, one of the country's most erratic and destructive caudillos, held power through military force and was systematically dismantling the economic structures his predecessors had built. The Potosí mint, which had been striking gold coinage for three centuries by this point, continued operating under conditions of chronic institutional instability.
KM#141 is a short-lived type. Bolivia decimalized and restructured its coinage system in the early 1870s, ending escudo-denominated gold production entirely.
