The Republic of South Peru was a short-lived state created in 1836 under Andrés de Santa Cruz's Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation scheme, and it ceased to exist entirely after Chilean and anti-confederation forces defeated Santa Cruz at the Battle of Yungay in January 1839. Coinage issued under this authority spans barely three years.
The 1838 date places this piece in the final full year of the republic's existence.
