The shield is surmounted by an arched imperial crown with elaborate decorative mantling on either side. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading PHS. D:G. HISP. Z. REX. CO. FL., identifying Philip II as King of Spain and Count of Flanders. The coin exhibits the characteristically irregular flan and bold but uneven strike typical of hammered copper coinage of the period. |
