The VOC duit was the workhorse of Dutch colonial commerce in the East Indies, minted by individual Dutch provinces — Gelderland among them — rather than by any central authority. Provincial minting rights meant quality and weight varied considerably across issues, and company administrators in Batavia complained repeatedly to the Heeren XVII about underweight deliveries from provincial mints undercutting the coin's credibility in local markets.
Gelderland's output ran across the full span of VOC solvency into its dissolution in 1799, after which the Batavian Republic absorbed the company's debts and continued issuing duits under state authority until colonial coinage was reorganized under Dutch East Indies administration.
