Reverse description The reverse presents the large interlaced VOC monogram — the cipher of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie — prominently occupying the central field, with the letters V, O, and C conjoined in the characteristic baroque intertwined style. A small sprig or branch device appears above the monogram at the top of the field, flanked on either side by a six-pointed star. The date 1791 is inscribed in the lower portion of the field beneath the monogram. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.

Additional information

The VOC duit was the workhorse of Dutch colonial commerce in the East Indies, minted by individual Dutch provinces — Gelderland among them — rather than by any central authority. Provincial minting rights meant quality and weight varied considerably across issues, and company administrators in Batavia complained repeatedly to the Heeren XVII about underweight deliveries from provincial mints undercutting the coin's credibility in local markets.

Gelderland's output ran across the full span of VOC solvency into its dissolution in 1799, after which the Batavian Republic absorbed the company's debts and continued issuing duits under state authority until colonial coinage was reorganized under Dutch East Indies administration.
