Piedforts — coins struck at double the standard planchet thickness using the same dies — were produced in the Dutch Republic primarily as presentation pieces and die-trial records, distributed to officials, foreign dignitaries, and mint personnel rather than released into commerce. Zeeland's piedfort ducatons from this period are among the most substantial silver pieces the province ever produced, each requiring exceptional die pressure to achieve full relief across the thick flan.
The Ducaton series itself was introduced in the Habsburg Netherlands in the sixteenth century and survived into the Republic as a high-value trade coin. Zeeland's mint at Middelburg struck these under close provincial oversight, and surviving piedfort examples suggest extremely limited production runs.
