The Ducaton, struck continuously across more than a century of Dutch provincial coinage, was never a coin of Zeeland alone — all seven United Provinces produced their own versions under the same weight standard, creating a chaotic monetary environment where nominally identical coins circulated alongside each other with subtle but legally significant differences in silver content and die workmanship.
