The Ducaton, struck continuously across more than a century of Dutch provincial coinage, was never a coin of Zeeland alone — all seven United Provinces produced their own versions under the same weight standard, creating a chaotic monetary environment where nominally identical coins circulated alongside each other with subtle but legally significant differences in silver content and die workmanship. Zeeland's issues are distinguished from those of Holland and Utrecht primarily through mint marks and minor heraldic details catalogued by Delmonte and Verkade, which is why the KM reference splits into two sub-varieties.
The long production run reflects the coin's genuine commercial utility in the spice and textile trades of the Dutch Atlantic world, where merchants trusted the Ducaton's silver purity over paper instruments.
